Montenegro was part of Yugoslavia at the Olympic Games between 1920 and 1988. After the country’s dissolution in 1992, Montenegro joined Serbia and participated in the Olympic Games between 1996 and 2004. After its independence in 2006, the Montenegrin Olympic Committee was established in 2006 and obtained recognition from the IOC the following year, debuting at the Olympics in Beijing 2008.

Although athletes from Montenegro have won medals 22 times in five different sports, these victories were achieved while competing in teams under the flags of Yugoslavia or the union of Serbia and Montenegro, rather than in individual competitions.
