Sebastian Vettel could return to Formula 1 in 2025

Sebastian Vettel surprised Formula 1 fans by revealing that he could return to compete in the category in 2025, after retiring at the end of 2022. The 36-year-old former driver left the possibility open during an interview with the British newspaper Sky Sports.

“Well, potentially I’m (on the market) because I don’t have a vacancy, but the question is: am I looking for one? I think it depends on the package. I retired from Formula 1 so I wouldn’t come back, but I said ‘you never know’, so … I think it still counts,” said Vettel.

Afterwards, the German made it clear that this is not the main priority and explained the reasons that weigh against this possibility, such as family issues. However, he stated that there is a chance.

“Obviously, it crosses my mind — I think about it (returning) but it’s not the main thought. I have three children at home. I’m busy every day, so there are a lot of other thoughts I have,” added the former driver.

Vettel accumulated four world championship titles throughout his career, which included 53 victories during the 16 years of racing. One of the speculated possibilities would be a return from retirement to Mercedes, as Hamilton will go to Ferrari. However, the German said that there are no conversations with the team.

“I had conversations with him (Toto Wolff, Mercedes owner), not exactly about a place in the team. We talked about the whole situation today, but I also spoke to other people who I still keep in touch with from time to time. I have some projects and ideas together with F1 and I need to see if they will work out or not, but I’m keeping in touch. There have to be a few more phone calls and conversations to really advance a little further. But it’s definitely one of the best places on the grid. In terms of performance, Mercedes has a great track record”, he concluded.
