The main draws of the ENGIE Open will begin. This Monday (1), starting at 10 am, the courts of Lagoa Iate Clube, in Florianópolis (SC), will simultaneously host the men’s tournament of the ATP Challenger 75 series, in addition to the women’s ITF W75.
Among the main highlights of the day is the duel between Brazilian and main favorite Thiago Monteiro against Russian Bogdan Bobrov.
In addition to the Ceará match, the day also features a 100% national clash between Pedro Sakamoto and João Reis in the men’s category. In the women’s division, Ana Candiotto faces North American Madison Sieg, while Camila Bossi plays against Argentine and 3rd seed Solana Sierra.
On Sunday (31), the matches of the first round of the qualifying competitions took place. Among the athletes still looking for places in the main draw is Gabriel Sidney, who beat Japanese Kaichi Uchida, 6/0 6/3. After the match, the Paraná native highlighted the event. “The atmosphere at the tournament is great. I really like playing in Floripa and I did well today. I managed to put pressure on the opponent and what I’ve been training, which made me gain confidence and everything went well on the court. Now I’m still looking to win one more to get into the bracket,” he said.
In the women’s competition, Letícia Vidal advances in the competition after beating favorite Romina Ccuno, from Peru, by 6/2 6/3. With the victory, the tennis player praised her attitude on the court. “I stayed solid in the first set and got a good lead early on. In the second set, the opponent came with everything and I needed to raise my level on the court a little. Expectations are always high at tournaments, but I try to think about every step and today was an important one,” she commented.
Among the Brazilians who also advanced to the second round of the men’s qualifiers are Daniel Dutra, Paulo Saraiva, José Pereira and Mateo Reyes. In the women’s category, Georgia Gulin joins Letícia.
In total, the ENGIE Open will distribute a total prize pool of US$ 142 thousand (around R$ 710 thousand at the current price), in addition to 75 points to the champion in the respective world rankings (ATP and WTA).
The two tournaments are part of the Banco BRB/ENGIE Professional Tennis Circuit and promote gender equality, with 12 competitions throughout the year, six for men and six for women.
