Brazilian Marcus D’Almeida, leader of the world archery ranking, fell in the quarterfinals of the World Ranking Event Brasil (WRE Brasil). He won a fight this Thursday (28), but was surprised by Salvadoran Oscar Ticas and lost 7-1 in the recurve bow contest. On the other hand, Bianca Rodrigues will compete for bronze in the women’s compound.

Marquinhos was the main favorite for the title of the event and had started his career very well in Maricá, leading the ranking phase, two days ago. Therefore, he was bye in the first round of the knockout stage and debuted in the round of 16, beating Chilean Ricardo Soto 6-2 (26/29, 28/26, 28/27 and 29/28). In the quarterfinals, however, he lost to the experienced Oscar Ticas 7-1 (28/26, 29/29, 29/27 and 28/26).

In addition to Marcus D’Almeida, Bernardo Oliveira and Matheus Ely also fell into the top-8, after two victories in the preliminary stages. Bernardo lost to Argentine Mario Jajarabilla 6-2 (28/26, 30/26, 26/28 and 27/24), while Matheus fell to Cuban Juan Cruz in the tiebreaker, after the score was tied at 5-5 (27 /23, 27/23, 23/26, 23/26 and 25/26).

Still in the men’s recurve, Mateus Carvalho, Daniel Xavier, Matheus Gomes and Jhonata Reis stopped in the round of 16, while Gabriel Veras and Gustavo Paulino lost in the 16th round. The final of this dispute will be between Argentine Mario Jajarabilla and Colombian Jorge Enriquez, on Sunday (31), at 2:50 pm. Oscar Ticas, Marquinhos’ tormentor, will compete for bronze against Juan Cruz.

Bianca competes for bronze in the compound

In addition to the men’s recurve, there was also a knockout contest in the women’s compound at WRE Brasil this Thursday morning. Bianca Rodrigues was the one who got the furthest, going all the way to the semi-finals. Fourth highest ranked in the tournament, she beat Argentine Guillermina Gonzalez (146 to 139) and compatriot Maria Santos (144 to 133) before losing to Salvadoran Sofia Paiz (147 to 143).

With the defeat in the semi-final, Bianca was sent to the bronze medal match. She will face fellow Salvadoran Paola Corado, on Sunday (31), at 10:07 am (Brasília time). The final, in fact, will be 100% El Salvador: Sofia Paiz against Camila Funes. Among the other Brazilians in the dispute, Camila Harada and Marianna Chaves fell in the quarterfinals.

More Brazil

It is worth noting that WRE Brasil takes place in parallel to the South American Archery Championship. In team competitions, the country won 12 medals in the sum of the two events. Also this Thursday, the WRE women’s recurve and men’s compound knockouts will take place, with the finals scheduled for Easter Sunday. This Friday, the South American competitions will take place.
