Carlos Sainz is on the rise in Formula 1. The 29-year-old Spaniard won his third victory in the category last weekend in Australia, impressing everyone with the ease of his triumph. Even though he had just come out of surgery, the Ferrari driver, who will leave the team after the 2024 season, dominated the race without major challenges.
This reignited the possibility of a return to Red Bull Racing in 2025. Helmut Marko, the team’s consultant, spoke on the matter.
With Sergio Perez’s contract also ending at the end of 2024, his stay has not yet been confirmed for next year, although rumors of renewal have recently emerged. Yuki Tsunoda also dreams of a place at Red Bull, but Sainz emerges as a strong name in the market.
“Of course his (Sainz) performance is fascinating,” Marko told Laola1. “But you have to consider that Checo (Perez) had three good races this year. His drop in performance at the Australian GP was due to a damaged floor and tire degradation. Its only weak point is its rating. If he improves on this, we won’t need to think about changes. The atmosphere in the team is great, including him.”
Despite the praise for Sainz, Max Verstappen’s current teammate Perez appears to be the favorite to remain at Red Bull in 2025. What about Yuki Tsunoda? The 23-year-old driver is surpassing Daniel Ricciardo in his fourth season in F1. However, Marko has not yet confirmed whether the Japanese is a serious candidate.
“We would need another driver for comparison. The question is: has Tsunoda become a top talent or is Ricciardo weak? After three races on completely different circuits, there is still no objective answer”, concluded Marko.
