ROME (Reuters) – Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Sunday that she will stand as a candidate in European elections in June in a bid to boost support for her Brothers of Italy party, although she will not take the role if elected.

The vote in the European Parliament, which takes place between June 6th and 9th, is a fundamental test of strength for their 18-month-old right-wing coalition.

“We want to do in Europe what we did in Italy… Create a majority that brings together the center-right forces and send the left into opposition,” Meloni told his enthusiastic supporters during a party conference in the coastal city of Pescara.
