Daniel Alves, after being released this Monday (25/3), after paying 1 million euros in bail, the equivalent of R$5.3 million, will be able to get his money back. The football player was sentenced to 4 and a half years in prison for raping a woman in a nightclub in Barcelona, Spain.
According to the criminalist and doctor from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Aury Lopes Jr. explained that, if the athlete obeys all orders, he can receive the full or partial amount back, which serves as a “guarantee”. “This bail serves to bind him to the process, to replace the precautionary detention to which he was subject through restrictions, such as a ban on leaving the country and having contact with the victim. The payment of the amount is fixed considering the seriousness of the crime and its economic conditions,” he told Estadão.
Lopes followed up with the clarification: “The rest is returned, even if convicted, because the bail is for him not to escape. If he did not flee, the amount is returned after these deductions. If he is convicted and is not found, does not present himself or is considered a fugitive, this amount will be lost. He gave bail to ensure he wouldn’t run away.”
Aury also recalled that, although on provisional release to await the second instance conviction, as Daniel’s defense filed an appeal, if he is convicted, this amount can be used to compensate the victim. If this happens, the cost will be deducted from the amount.
