O Flamengo lost 1-0 to Palestinian this Tuesday (7), in Coquimbo, Chile, for the fourth round of the group stage of the CONMEBOL Libertadores.
Cornejo scored a great goal for the Chileans against Rubro-Negro, which became more complicated in the fight to qualify for the round of 16 and increased the pressure on coach Tite.
With just one victory in the last six games, the coach is no longer unanimous and has been the main target of protest from the fans.
The defeat left the Rio team in 3rd group placement AND with 4 points, 5 unless the leader Bolivar. The Palestinian is the runner-up in the bracket, with 6while the Millionaires is the lantern with just 1.
Now, Flamengo will have two home matches to try to qualify for the knockout stage: Bolívar (15/05) and Millonarios (28/05).
The game
The 1st half saw a lot of exchange between Palestino and Flamengo. The Chilean team started better and was threatened by Martínez’s shot, which forced Rossi to make a good save.
Rubro-Negro got scared with shots from outside the area by Gerson, Bruno Henrique and Cebolinha. In the final stretch, Rubro-Negro even had more volume, but lacked aim.
The Rio team came back pressing for the 2nd half and wasted an unbelievable chance in the 11th minute, when Bruno Henrique tried to take advantage of the surplus, but, free from marking and with the goalkeeper down, he shot wide.
Until 20, Cornejo hit a precise shot on the drawer to put Palestino in front of the scoreboard.
At a disadvantage, Flamengo went for it all or nothing. At 25, Luiz Araújo hit the post.
The final stretch was full of pressure from Rubro-Negro, who were unable to break through Palestino’s strong marking and suffered yet another defeat away from home in the competition.
After the final whistle, Flamengo fans present in Coquimbo booed the team’s performance. And Tite was once again the target of insults.
