Index fell 0.3% in February
Tomaz Silva/Agência Brasil – 22.02.2022

Brazilian industrial production fell 0.3% in February compared to January, according to data from the Monthly Industrial Survey released this Wednesday (3) by IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics). The result represents the second consecutive month of decline, with an accumulated loss of 1.8%.

During the month, one of the four major economic categories and 10 of the 25 industrial sectors surveyed saw a reduction in production.

Among the activities, the greatest negative influence was recorded by chemical products (-3.5%), extractive industries (-0.9%) and pharmochemical and pharmaceutical products (-6.0%).

On the other hand, among the 13 activities that showed an increase in production, motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (6.5%) and cellulose, paper and paper products (5.8%) exerted the main positive impacts.

With these results, industrial production is 1.1% below the pre-pandemic level (February 2020) and 17.7% below the record level reached in May 2011.

It is also worth highlighting the advances made by the sectors of non-metallic mineral products (4.5%), rubber products and plastic material (3.0%), computer equipment, electronic and optical products (4.2% ) and electrical machines, apparatus and materials (2.4%).

Among the major economic categories, still in comparison with the immediately previous month, intermediate goods (-1.2%) recorded the only negative rate in February 2024.

February 2024 x February 2023

Compared to February 2023, the index grew 5%, registering the seventh consecutive positive result in this type of comparison. In the last twelve months, there was an increase of 1%, intensifying the pace of growth compared to the results of January 2024 (0.4%) and December 2023 (0.1%).

Among the activities, the greatest negative influence was recorded by chemical and pharmaceutical products (-17.5%), pressured, to a large extent, by the lower production of medicines. Another important negative impact was recorded by the maintenance, repair and installation of machinery and equipment sector (-8.3%).

Still compared to the same period last year, the industrial sector also recorded an expansion of 4.3% in the first two months of 2024.

During the period, the indicator had positive results in the four major economic categories, 20 of the 25 sectors, 55 of the 80 groups and 57.7% of the 789 products surveyed. It is worth mentioning that February 2024 (19 days) had 1 more working day than the same month in the previous year (18).
