The State Department of Traffic (Detran) announced the schedule of activities aimed at raising awareness among Piauí residents about the importance of adopting measures for safety and preservation of lives in traffic throughout the month of May, when educational actions of the 11th Yellow May Campaign will be intensified .

The themed event will begin with a lecture on May 2nd, at Escola Piauiense de Trânsito. The closing takes place with a race on the 26th. The organization should also bring together experts and students from schools in the state education network with lectures, in addition to promoting educational interventions and actions in several cities, such as Oeiras, Picos, São Raimundo Nonato, Valença, Simões.

This is a global initiative that seeks to highlight the alarming accident rates. With the slogan “Peace in traffic begins with you”, Yellow May 2024 aims to encourage reflection on the role of each individual in the cultural construction of safer traffic.

According to Luana Barradas, general director of Detran, the actions will be aimed at pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and drivers. “Important gestures, such as the appropriate use of safety equipment and respect for traffic rules, can significantly contribute to improving road conditions”, highlights the manager.

The program integrates the activities of the Pact for the Reduction of Traffic Mortality, a program launched in 2023 by the State Government and led by Detran, which consists of joint work with various departments, federal and municipal bodies and social entities, to change the indicators that point out Piauí as the third state with the highest accident rate in Brazil, being the first when it comes to motorcyclists. The objective is to apply public policies to reduce the number of traffic deaths by up to 50% by 2030.

“The issue of road safety is a reflection that needs to be present in everyone’s daily lives. How do each of us contribute to road safety? It is from this reflection that people begin to look for ways to make traffic safer”, highlights Liliam Araújo, director of Escola Piauiense de Trânsito.
