In reference to Nazism, Adidas blocks number 44 on Germany’s shirts

A adidas, supplier of material for the German national team, announced that it will block purchases of the new German team t-shirt Germany that are personalized with the number 44.

The justification is the similarity of the numbering with the SS rune, an abbreviation for Schutzstaffel, a paramilitary group that operated in the country during the Nazi regime. The information is from the Sport Bild portal this Monday (1st).

Currently, the site already blocks names that refer to the dictatorial regime that occurred in Germany during the 1930s/40s, such as Adolf Hitler and Führer. In recent years, personalized shirts alluding to Nazism and also Italian fascism have been seen in stadiums across Europe.

In an official statement, Oliver Brüggen, spokesperson for Adidas, commented on the matter: “We will block the number 44 as quickly as possible. People from around 100 nations work at Adidas, our company stands for the promotion of diversity and inclusion, and we as a company are actively committed to combating xenophobia, anti-Semitism, violence and hatred in all its forms.”
