Rio de Janeiro’s Civil Police Internal Affairs will hear from the former head of the Homicide Department Rivaldo Barbosa about accusations of corruption and promises of impunity. According to a high-ranking source interviewed by CBN, other police officers will also be called to testify, to give their versions. Among them are delegate Giniton Lages and commissioner Marcos Antônio de Barros, who are also being investigated.

The institution opened an internal investigation to check the information that was revealed by the Federal Police in the Marielle case. The PF pointed out in the report that there was a scheme to sell crime cover-ups within the homicide police station. According to Ronnie Lessa, who fired the shots that killed the councilwoman, the crime was committed with guaranteed impunity.

By default, investigations of this type usually hear first from the key witnesses that gave rise to the investigation and lastly from the accused, in this case, Rivaldo Barbosa and other public agents. Next week, the intention is to collect the testimony of militia member Orlando Oliveira de Araújo, known as Orlando Curicica.

Orlando was the main suspect of being the mastermind behind the murder of councilwoman Marielle Franco in the first months of the investigation, back in 2018. At the time, the militia member accused Rivaldo Barbosa of receiving bribes to sabotage investigations.

To the Federal Police, Orlando Curicica reported a corruption scheme, which guaranteed criminals that crimes linked to gambling would not be investigated.

The newspaper O GLOBO had access to the video of Curicia’s testimony to the Public Ministry. Orlando says the order was “to streamline the investigation”.

So strengthening HD was much better for Dr. Romero and for whoever was with him, which in this case was Dr. Rivaldo. Because the homicides weren’t going to stop, misdemeanors never stopped killing, they still kill to this day. The difference is that it is not investigated today. The cases that Dr. Romero worked on were what they called drying the investigation. How does this work? I’m a friend or I pay to be a friend, okay? So avoid producing evidence against me. Like this? There is footage of the place where the murder took place. I hold this seizure search for more than 30 days. Why? Because every recording is renewed after 30 days. All these security cameras are like this, every 30 days they renew the footage. So I only release this seizure search for this camera, for this filming location, after 30 days.

Despite the interest in listening to Curicica, the Civil Police consider that the criminal is the leader of a militia and was arrested by the Homicide Police, and, therefore, would be interested in disqualifying the unit’s work.

In a statement, Barbosa’s defense said that his client did not obstruct the investigations into the deaths of Marielle and Anderson and that it was during his administration that Ronnie Lessa was arrested. Giniton Lages stated that during the time he presided over the police investigation, he carried out all the necessary steps to clarify the Marielle case. CBN was unable to contact the defense of Marcos Antônio de Barros and Orlando Oliveira de Araújo.
