In a recent investigation, a worrying discovery came to light after a detailed examination of the contents carried by the ship that collided in Baltimore. The president of the National Transportation Safety Board, Jennifer Homendy, revealed at a press conference last Wednesday (27) significant details about the materials on board the ship. According to the analysis, the vessel was carrying an alarming amount of substances considered dangerous.

A senior investigator specializing in hazardous materials carried out an in-depth study of the ship’s cargo and manifest, bringing to light the existence of 56 containers containing hazardous materials. These 764 tons of hazardous cargo contain, for the most part, corrosive and flammable materials, as well as a diverse category of dangerous items, including lithium-ion batteries, as classified by the class nine hazardous materials group.

What Are the Implications of Hazardous Materials on Board?

This discovery raises significant concerns regarding the safety of transporting hazardous materials and the potential impact on the environment. Corrosive and flammable substances, especially in large quantities, pose a notable risk of causing devastating accidents. Lithium-ion batteries, for example, are known for their potential fire hazards, requiring careful handling and storage to avoid dangerous situations.

What Was Observed With Container Breaches?

According to Homendy, during the inspection it was found that some containers were breached. This indicates that the integrity of these containers has been compromised, putting not only the safety of the ship and its crew at risk, but also the health of the surrounding environment. Adding to the concern, an unusual glow was observed in the river in the vicinity of the ship, raising alarm about possible material leaks.

This incident serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of rigorous safety practices when transporting hazardous materials and the need for constant vigilance to protect human life and the environment. While authorities continue to investigate the extent of the damage and specific violations, the community awaits answers and, above all, measures to ensure such occurrences do not repeat.
