The defense of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) informed the Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes that it was “illogical” to assume that his stay at the Hungarian embassy was a request for asylum or an attempt to escape. The stay took place between February 12th and 14th, days after the former agent had his passport confiscated.

The images of Bolsonaro in the diplomatic representation were published this Monday (25) by the North American newspaper The New York Times. After the repercussion of the case, Moraes gave Bolsonaro 48 hours to formally explain his stay at the Hungarian embassy in Brasília.

The lawyers argued that the former president maintains a “collaborative” stance with the Brazilian justice system and that a preventive arrest warrant was “not imminent” at the time, according to the newspaper’s findings. The globe.

“Given the absence of concern about preventive detention, it is illogical to suggest that the petitioner’s visit to the embassy of a foreign country was a request for asylum or an attempt to escape… The very imposition of the recent precautionary measures made this assumption highly unlikely and unfounded ”, said the defense.

On February 8, Federal Supreme Court (STF) Minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered the former president to hand over his passport to the Federal Police. The decision was taken as part of Operation Tempus Veritatis, which investigates an alleged coup plot to keep Bolsonaro in power after the 2022 elections.

Earlier, lawyer Fabio Wajngarten, who is part of the former president’s legal team, said he would like to clarify the facts personally in a meeting with Moraes. “In compliance with the order of Minister Alexandre de Moraes, in view of the recess of the Supreme Court today, the defense of [ex-]President Jair Bolsonaro will electronically file the petition regarding clarifications regarding the President’s visit to the Hungarian Embassy,” said Wajngarten on X.

“The defense reiterates its desire to speak personally with the Minister in order to completely elucidate any and all fanciful speculation on the subject”, added the defender. In the document sent to the STF, the lawyers pointed out that Bolsonaro “always maintained close dialogue with the authorities of that country [Hungria]dealing with strategic international policy issues of interest to the conservative sector”.

In a note, released on Monday (25), the defense highlighted that Bolsonaro “was staying at the Magyar embassy, by invitation” and “spoke with numerous authorities from the friendly country updating the political scenarios of the two nations”.

“Any other interpretations that go beyond the information provided here constitute an evident fictional work, unrelated to the reality of the facts and are, in practice, another list of fake news”, said the lawyers.
