The Minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes gave the Federal Police 60 days to analyze the material seized during the operation to arrest the alleged perpetrators of the murders of councilor Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes. The decision was given during the minister’s order authorizing the operation of the PF, according to the blog Segredos do Crime, from the newspaper O Globo.

Previously, the original version of this article incorrectly reported that the PGR had asked Minister Alexandre de Moraes for more time for investigations. In fact, as usual, the minister granted the 60 days, without being asked. The PGR, in this case, has been exchanging information directly with the delegate responsible for the case to support the Federal Police investigation. Moraes granted a two-month deadline, on the 23rd, for federal investigators to analyze the material seized in the searches and produce more evidence to attach to the PF’s final report.

After the arrests of those accused of ordering Marielle’s death — the counselor of the State Court of Auditors (TCE) Domingos Brazão and his brother, the federal deputy Chiquinho Brazão —, in addition to the delegate Rivaldo Barbosa, suspected of hindering the case, the PGR began to analyze the investigation to report, or not, those indicted by the Federal Police. After reading the report and with the data provided by the PF, the Attorney General’s Office will be better informed to decide. Meanwhile, the accused will continue to be held in federal prisons.

When contacted, the Federal Police said they would not comment. The column tries to contact the defense of the accused.

Civil Police will hear militia member Orlando Curicica in investigation into agent conduct

In the first months after the murder of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes, militiaman Orlando Oliveira de Araújo, known as Orlando Curicica, was the main suspect of being the mastermind behind the councilor’s execution. With the focus on him, Curicica decided to share everything he knew about the criminal underworld in Rio and accused police chief Rivaldo Barbosa of receiving bribes to sabotage investigations. Most of the statements were used in the report produced by the PF to arrest those responsible for the crime last Sunday. In the document, other police officers suspected of being part of the corruption network at the Homicide Police Station, which had already been identified by the militia member five years ago, also appeared. As a result, the Civil Police initiated an investigation by the agency’s Internal Affairs Department to investigate the conduct of the agents mentioned in the report and stated that the militia member himself will be heard in the investigation.

Regarding statements made by him in 2018, the Civil Police stated that Curicica “is the leader of a militia and was arrested by the Homicide Police Station for a crime of this nature” and that, for this reason, he “has every interest in disqualifying the unit’s work.” They also state that “the statement, by itself, has little or no credit if it has no other evidence to corroborate the claims.”
