The director defended Superman’s decision to kill the villain at the end of the film

Zack Snyder once again spoke about a controversial decision made by Superman in The Man of Steel (2013) when the hero decides to kill the villain General Zod. In an interview with GQ, the director stated that the character would be a “farce” if he hadn’t committed the act in the film.

In the scene, Superman goes to save a family that is about to be annihilated by General Zod. So, to stop the villain from committing another murder, the hero decides to kill him.

Although many fans did not like this sequence in The Man of SteelSnyder believes that having Superman kill his antagonist in the film was the best way to resolve the situation:

“He wasn’t going to stop, he wasn’t going to negotiate a solution, so it was either Zod or us. And that was basically the game. There was no middle ground. Zod said ‘we’re going to fight until I kill you or you kill me’ — that’s the game, but they keep asking ‘why would you put Superman in that position?’

I think, well, if Superman can’t handle that challenge, then he’s a fake, and he’s not the one you have to like — he has to deal with the scenarios that come up in front of him, he can’t choose like you do. You also can’t choose when something is outside of what you believe to be moral.”

General Zod is killed by Superman in the controversial ending of Man of Steel.

Launched in 2013, The Man of Steel arrived in theaters with Henry Cavill as Superman. The film was the starting point for a DC cinematic universe, propelling films like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Wonder Woman (2017), for example.
