The Breaking Bad actor makes a cameo in A24’s war film.

Civil War is one of those films that you can watch on the edge of your seat because of so much anxiety. One of the most tense moments in Alex Garland’s film is starring Jesse Plemons, who in less than 10 minutes manages to leave an entire movie theater in a cold sweat. One very important detail of the sequence has a frightening meaning – a pair of red glasses.

Garland gave very specific guidelines to costume designer Meghan Kasperlik regarding the characterization of the militiaman: he had to be wearing a military uniform. However, Plemons wanted to bring a special touch and suggested the plastic accessory that could easily be seen at a university party:

“Jesse brought his sunglasses to the fitting and asked what we thought. I was hesitant at first as I didn’t want them to take away from the intensity of the scene. The goal was to make the characters and costumes look real and believable, sometimes blending into the setting without drawing attention, but this was a moment to stand out,” explained Kasperlik in an interview with GQ.

“A fascist president”: For Wagner Moura and Kirsten Dunst, comparing the Civil War with reality is frightening

The moment in question shows what happens when the group of journalists made up of Kirsten Dunst, Wagner Moura, Cailee Spaeny and Stephen Henderson meet militiamen on the road. The Civil War trailer previewed the scene with the striking phrase “but what kind of Americans are you?”, used as a threat by Jesse’s character.

What is the meaning behind Jesse Plemons’ glasses in Civil War?

Meghan Kasperlik also highlights that the accessory still serves as a sinister question to the audience: “For me, the sunglasses should make the audience question everything about this character. Who is this man? Why is he using them? Did he remove them from a person before taking their life?”, instigates the costume designer.

It is worth mentioning that the setting for the tension-filled sequence is the surroundings of a gigantic mass grave where the militia dumps the bodies of their victims.

Additionally, the sunglasses are inspired by real-life figures who look like the guerrilla fighter played by Jesse Plemons. During the invasion of the Capitol, in 2021, extremists wore somewhat different costumes to participate in the attack, such as fur coats, tribal clothes, superhero costumes and colorful wigs, for example.
