Today the Marvel Cinematic Universe continues with Tom Holland as its main Spider-Man, with the hero also expected to have an important role in the next Avengers films.

X-MEN, DAREDEVIL AND ALL DEADPOOL 3 PARTICIPATIONS

But before Tom, the first cinematic Spider-Man was Tobey Maguire, fired from the role in 2010, when Sony and director Sam Raimi decided to end production on the hero’s 4th film.

Unfortunately, it was 5 years later, in 2015, that Marvel and Sony made an agreement to integrate Spider-Man into the MCU, years after Tobey Maguire had already left the role. But what if this agreement came earlier?

ScreenRant explored the possibilities of what could have happened if Tobey Maguire became the MCU’s first Spider-Man, and possibilities that you can follow below:

How an Established Spider-Man Would Change the MCU

Having had several stories for years, Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker would already be an experienced superhero by the time Tony Stark became Iron Man. Since many early MCU stories took place outside of New York City, Spider-Man’s adventures would not create continuity problems.

Perhaps Spider-Man’s first big impact would also only begin in Captain America: Civil War, when Tony Stark would presumably try to recruit him to his pro-Sokovia Accords team. Being a more adult version of the character, and who values his secret identity very much, Stark would have to offer something to the hero, perhaps an incentive or promise about improving his reputation among New Yorkers when they discover that Spider-Man is an ally of the Iron Man and the government.

A Spider-Man 4 would take place within the MCU

Spider-Man is popularly seen as a teenage superhero, and Tobey Maguire could have a hard time continuing to play the famous hero for much longer, which is why his Spider-Man 4 would likely be his last solo outing and a mantle passage.

With Spider-Man 4 being released a decade after the 3rd film, it would be appropriate to introduce May “Mayday” Parker as the daughter of Peter and Mary Jane. Comic book fans know that she eventually becomes Spider-Girl, but this hypothetical MCU version would still not be a superhero, taking on only a supporting role in the hero’s latest solo film. Only at the end would the film reveal that she inherited her father’s powers, establishing her as Peter’s successor.

Spider-Girl would be in Avengers: Endgame

Spider-Man’s role in Avengers: Infinity War would likely remain the same, including his death when Thanos destroyed half of all life in the universe. Assuming Mary Jane also dies, young Mayday could end up in the custody of an Avenger, possibly a guilt-ridden Tony Stark. The five-year jump in Endgame would already bring Mayday closer to the age at which she began her superhero career in the comics.

Maybe Mayday wouldn’t participate in the Time Heist with the Avengers, but she would certainly reunite with her parents after the Hulk undoes Thanos’ snap and fight alongside her father Spider-Man as Spider-Girl in costume for the first time.

Instead of Spider-Man: Far From Home, we would have the first Spider-Girl film. Now Peter Parker and Mary Jane would return in supporting roles, gradually accepting Mayday’s choice to accept her role as a superhero. While the franchise as a whole could have remained relatively unchanged, having Tobey Maguire as the MCU’s first Spider-Man would have given him fascinating new appearances after his original trilogy.
