Nick Albiero won a place at the Paris Olympics this Wednesday afternoon (8) and became the first openly gay swimmer to represent Brazil in the competition, which begins on July 26th in the French capital. The athlete qualified for the 200m butterfly category and is the first Brazilian man from the LGBTQIA+ community to compete in the sport.

The swimmer is the son of Brazilian coach Arthur Albiero and has lived in the United States for years. However, about a year ago he decided to compete representing Brazil and moved to Belo Horizonte to train with a club from Minas Gerais.

In Paris, he will be one of the Brazilian athletes to compete for medals. Another LGBTQIA+ swimmer and Olympic medalist who will be in the competition is Ana Marcela Cunha, who won the gold medal in the aquatic marathon at the Tokyo Games in 2021.

At the last Olympics, at least 180 athletes were openly LGBTQIA+. In that edition, the Brazilian delegation went to Japan with 14 athletes who were members of the community for the competition.
