Cold air mass begins to bring lower temperatures to areas of Rio Grande do Sul

On Wednesday night (8), it is already starting to get cold in some areas of Rio Grande do Sul. mass of cold air that is in Argentina approaches the borderwhere cities such as Quaraí, in Campanha Gaúcha, and Jaguarão, in the south of the state, are located.

In Quaraí, the temperature can reach 12ºC, with a sensation of just 9ºC. In Jaguarão, 13ºC, with an impression of 10ºC.

This Thursday (9), it should get colder: minimums of 7ºC in Bagé and 9ºC in Uruguaiana.

Thermometers may also show less in other regions. In the central part, where Santa Maria is located, and around Lagoa dos Patos, where Rio Grande is located, the forecast is for 11ºC to dawn and, even in the afternoon, the sun is not very hot. It predominates where the map (see below) is yellow. In the green part, there is a possibility of rain.

A cold front, which formed this Wednesday, is advancing there, taking instability close to Porto Alegre and the Guaíba River. Its waters flow into Lagoa dos Patos, which, in turn, flows into the Atlantic Ocean.

However, this exit tends to face yet another difficulty starting this Thursday: the change in wind direction. To the Forecasts indicate that they will blow from the sea towards the continent, favoring the damming of water.

Another point of attention is the Expectation of more rain, and in large quantities, between Friday (10) and Sunday (12). Meteorologists believe that the pink parts (see below) may be the most affected.

According to data from the government of the state of Rio Grande do Sul, the scale of the tragedy is very clear: from April until now, most cities in Rio Grande do Sul have been affected by storms, very different from what occurred in September 2023, when severe storms also punished the gauchos.

This Wednesday, meteorological models confirm that the trend for next week is for more intense cold. In Santana do Livramento, on the border with Uruguay, for example, it gets cold this Thursday, then the temperatures rise a little on Friday and Saturday, on Sunday they fall again and, on Monday, the predicted maximum is only 12ºC, and with rain.

O The fear is that, when the rain stops, temperatures will plummet for good, including the risk of frost.
