Ministers Paulo Pimenta (Secretariat of Communication) and Waldez Góes (Integration) announced this Thursday (8) an ordinance that facilitates the transfer of emergency resources to cities affected by the rains in Rio Grande do Sul.

Funds may be requested by mayors who are having difficulty preparing emergency plans.

The amounts to be transferred will vary depending on the size of the city you request, being:

  • R$ 200 thousand for municipalities with up to 50 thousand inhabitants;
  • R$300 thousand for municipalities with a population between 50 thousand and 100 thousand;
  • R$500 thousand for municipalities with a population above 100 thousand.

“These are values for immediate help. This does not mean that there will not be other values from the plans. This is for water, food, hygiene materials, coverings, chemical bathrooms. We are making life easier for city councils, while they prepare the plans”, said Pimenta.

The national secretary of Civil Defense, Woleni Wolff, explained that these resources will be released regardless of approval of the emergency plan. Mayors need to send a letter to Civil Defense requesting the amounts.

Wolff also said that, to date, 30 restoration and humanitarian aid plans have already been presented by 27 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul. Together, these plans total R$22 million in allocated resources.

The secretary also said that the government of Rio Grande do Sul requested resources to supply helicopters used to rescue people. “R$12 million for aircraft and another R$1.6 million for servicing light vehicles, trucks, machines, equipment. This amount will still be committed today,” he declared.

In Porto Alegre, around 11 thousand are in city hall shelters

Commercial flights and safety

Paulo Pimenta stated that the government is studying the possibility of releasing the Canoas Air Base (RS) and other regional airports for the operation of commercial flights, since Salgado Filho Airport, the main airport in the state, is closed due to the rains in Porto Happy.

The Minister of the Communication Secretariat also stated that men from the National Force are helping with public security in Rio Grande do Sul. There are negotiations to increase the number of available personnel to 600 men.

The delivery of 220 water purifiers and the release of emergency resources to cities in Rio Grande do Sul hit by storms in recent days were also announced.

According to Paulo Pimenta, the items were donated by businesspeople and influencers in an action coordinated by the first lady, Janja da Silva.

According to Paulo Pimenta, the purifiers will be distributed primarily to shelters that do not have access to drinking water. Around 70,000 people are in shelters in the state. The number could increase to 80 thousand in the next few hours.

Each purifier, according to Pimenta, has the capacity to purify 5 thousand liters of water per day.

“This will allow us to purify 1.1 million liters of water per day,” said the minister. According to him, the purifiers were unloaded at the Canoas Air Base (RS) along with other supplies and donations
