Energy Matrices: understand the operation of the Sergipe thermoelectric plant

With the capacity to store liquefied natural gas, a ship that supports energy generation in Sergipe is a fundamental part of the process. The floating unit is expected to remain off the state’s coast for more than 20 years.

The gas that reaches the ship moves the turbines of the Porto de Sergipe Thermoelectric Plant, one of the largest thermoelectric plants in Latin America, located in the municipality of Barra dos Coqueiros.

“The ship has the capacity to regasify up to 21 million cubic meters per day, and the plant uses only six. And this is one of the assets that the state of Sergipe has,” said the manager of the unit’s Technological Park, which houses the plant, Miguel Fiuza.

Opened in 2020, the thermoelectric plant has the capacity to supply 15% of the energy demand in the Northeast. However, it only operates as requested when there is an energy deficit reported by the National Electric System Operator (ONS).

The expectation is that the plant’s distribution capacity will be expanded when a gas pipeline of around 25 km is built that will connect the state terminal to the national gas pipeline network.

Started in 2023, the Sergipe Terminal Interconnection Project with the Transportadora Associada de Gás (TAG) network foresees that the gas pipeline will cross three municipalities in Sergipe: Barra dos Coqueiros, Santo Amaro das Brotas and Rosário do Catete.
