I write directly from Washington, DC airport, after participating in the hearing of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the US Congress. Several Brazilian parliamentarians were present, and the witnesses who gave testimony about the situation of freedom of expression in our country were journalists Michael Shellenberger and Paulo Figueiredo, as well as the CEO and founder of Rumble, Chris Pavlovski, and a PT member called Fabio de Sa and Silva.

The chairman, Republican congressman Chris Smith, opened by talking about the importance of freedom of expression in the world, stressing that it was not a dispute between left or right, but rather a fundamental right. He thanked Elon Musk for his efforts in defending this freedom, even though he disagreed with the businessman in several areas, as he is a defender of labor unions. Smith cited Cuba as an example of a regime that killed freedom a long time ago, and expressed concern about Brazil’s direction today.

It was a hearing that revealed the regrettable situation we have in Brazil today, where the Rule of Law has been replaced by a state of exception.

The deputy for Florida, Maria Salazar, showed an image of Alexandre de Moraes at the high point of the hearing, demonstrating astonishment at the picture that has a person convicted of corruption in the Presidency and a “totalitarian operator” in Justice, possibly working in the service of this corrupt person. “Poor Brazil”, lamented the congresswoman. This was without her knowing that Alexandre was an employee of Alckmin, Lula’s deputy, and that he appointed his personal lawyer and his long-time communist colleague who was her minister to the Supreme Court. The degree of promiscuity in Brazil is unthinkable for foreigners.

The left, however, has learned quickly. Communists lie in all languages, and it would be no different in English. From the Democratic side, only ridiculous platitudes and slogans came from the narrative promoted by the PT delegation that was here recently. Trying to divert the focus from the central issue, attacking Bolsonaro as “homophobic” and “coupist”, the Democratic congressmen exposed the degree of radicalization of the American left, today indistinguishable from a PSOL of life. It looked like a federal DCE’s activism, and the PT “academic” they found, Fabio Sa da Silva, participated in the same horrible circus.

But the truth is insistent. Shellenberger reported how an American citizen journalist has even been criminally persecuted in Brazil just for showing facts, and pointed out undue American interference in our elections. Deep down, the Democrats precisely want to protect Biden from this crime, which brought to power a corrupt defender of China and Iran. Paulo Figueiredo exposed the type of arbitrary punishment that Brazilian journalists living in America suffered for daring to criticize the system, and the CEO of Rumble admitted that he refused to follow Alexandre’s dictatorial decisions to ban certain accounts, like Monark’s, due to political differences.

Ultimately, it was a revealing hearing about the regrettable situation we have in Brazil today, where the Rule of Law has been replaced by a state of exception. The leftist crowd tried to raise smoke screens, but anyone who paid attention to the facts brought by the witnesses will have no other conclusion to draw than this, which is our sad reality: Brazilian democracy is dead. It will not be saved by magic or by the American Congress, or by any silver bullet from the Committee. But external pressure is increasing significantly, and this could make Alexandre’s stay as the country’s dictator unsustainable. There will be consequences for the country and for the individual if this continues like this. Even more so if Trump returns to the White House…
