The Salvador Basic Basket, calculated by the Superintendency of Economic and Social Studies of Bahia (SEI), based on 2,822 price quotations made in 98 commercial establishments (supermarkets, butchers, bakeries and open-air markets) in the city, now costs R$ 594.89 in April 2024. Therefore, when compared to the estimated cost in the immediately previous month, there was an increase of 1.59% – an increase of R$9.30 cents in relation to March, in nominal terms.
Of the 25 products in Salvador’s Basic Basket, 11 registered an increase in prices: tomatoes (30.95%), onions (28.20%), crystal sugar (6.98%), soybean oil (5.89%), ground coffee (4.07%), apple (3.76%), butter (2.28%), milk (2.02%), mozzarella cheese (1.89%), cassava flour (1.02% ) and prime meat (0.41%). On the other hand, 13 products showed a reduction: country meat (-16.37%), corn flakes (-14.66%), second-rate meat (-13.96%), chicken eggs (-9.09 %), beans (-4.79%), dish cheese (-4.37%), English potatoes (-3.49%), Calabrian sausage (-3.27%), rice (-1.39%) , carrots (-1.05%), French bread (-0.60%), chicken (-0.39%) and silver bananas (-0.12%). Only pasta (0.00%) remained stable.
In April 2024, of the 25 products that make up the Salvador Basic Basket, the subset of ingredients related to the Salvador lunch – consisting of beans, rice, meat, cassava flour, tomato and onion – increased by 3.84% and was responsible for 37.86% of the value of the basket. In turn, the subgroup of foods typical for the morning meal – made up of coffee, milk, sugar, bread, butter (and/or cheese) – increased by 0.47% and was responsible for 31.86% of the value of the basket in the month of April 2024.
The working time spent by a worker from Salvador to obtain a basic food basket was 100 hours and 12 minutes, which is equivalent to the commitment of 45.55% of the net value of a minimum wage of R$ 1,306.10, after deducting the value of 7.50% of the contribution to Social Security.
