Teachers go on strike at UFSC

Professors at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) went on strike this Tuesday (7). According to the union, each teacher needs to notify students whether they are going to stop or continue teaching.

In a statement, the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services informed that the restructuring of careers in the area of education is a priority commitment of the government; that the proposal presented means a total adjustment of 23% for civil servants; and which remains open to dialogue with servers (Check out the full note below).

The strike was approved by the category last week and officially began this Tuesday. The teachers list 13 points of demands. The main ones are related to salaries and career advancement.

“The salary issue is because the government proposed a 0% adjustment this year, which is unacceptable on the part of the category. It is one of the reasons why we are discussing the negotiation for all federal public servants that there be an adjustment this year “, said the president of the Teachers’ Union of the Federal Universities of Santa Catarina (Apufsc), José Fletes.

Another demand from professors is in relation to investment in the university’s infrastructure, which saw repeated budget reductions between 2019 and 2022.

“In previous years of governments, there was practically no funding for decent maintenance of teaching rooms, teaching laboratories, research laboratories and, if you walk around the campus, you can see that we have buildings that practically require recovery to have decent conditions of work”, declared Fletes.

In a note released last week, the UFSC rectory reported that “it hopes to establish a channel of dialogue and dialogue with the teaching category, as is already happening with the strike command for technical-administrative education employees.”

Next week, new negotiation meetings should be held at the Ministry of Education, in Brasília. The last time teachers went on strike at UFSC was 12 years ago.

What the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services says

Check out the full note from the ministry below.

The restructuring of careers in the area of Education is a priority commitment of the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services. On 4/19, the government presented a proposal for an adjustment of 9.0% in January 2025 and 3.5% in May 2026. What is new is that the initially proposed adjustments (of 4.5% in May 2025 and May 2026) were transformed into a single installment of 9% and brought forward to January 2025 and a further 3.5% was added in 2026. This means that, added to the increase granted in 2023, of 9%, it is assured, at least, a total increase of 23% for administrative technicians and teachers during the Lula government. It is a proposal that replaces not only all the inflation projected for the period from 2023 to 2026, estimated at around 16%, but also an important portion of the inflation of past governments, which did not negotiate and did not provide any readjustment for the public service.

In addition to the specific proposal for education careers, it is worth remembering that at the end of April, through the Ministry of Management and Innovation in Public Services (MGI), the Federal Government and the entities representing federal public servants, which include education careers , signed an agreement for a 52% adjustment in food assistance (from R$658 to R$1,000), retroactive from May 2024, with payment on June 1st. In 2023, the government had already granted a 9% linear salary increase for all federal public servants and a 43.6% increase in food allowance (which was R$458.00 and went to R$658.00). The April agreement also established an increase in average supplementary health care per capita (“health aid”) and an increase in pre-school assistance (“daycare aid”).

The Ministry of Management remains open to dialogue with employees in the education area and all other areas.
