Group of volunteers spot alligators in flooded areas in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre

The group of surfers who came together to rescue people and animals islands in Rio Grande do Sul came across one of the dangers brought by floods this Tuesday, 7. In Eldorado do Sul, volunteers report having come across many alligators swimming through the flooded streets.

Pedro Scooby, Lucas Chumbo, Iankel Noronha and other big wave surfers traveled for around 20 hours to the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. The group uses its own equipment, including jet skis, to help rescue residents and animals.

Earlier this Tuesday, the leader of the group of surfers, known as Quinho’, shared reports of alligator sightings on the streets of Eldorado do Sul. His wife, influencer Gretha, published photos of the reptiles and issued warnings so that the population.

“Notify everyone who still has contact in the houses! Everyone! You need to evacuate the city!”, wrote Gretha. She also shares videos of rescues made by her husband and information about donations, shelters and shares the needs of the population affected by the storms.

O Earth questioned Civil Defense about the case, but received no response. The space remains open for demonstrations.

The number of deaths recorded as a result of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul rose to 95, according to the Civil Defense bulletin released at 6pm this Tuesday.

Regarding the missing, the number remained at 131. To date, there are records of 1,443,950 people affected by the disaster in 401 municipalities. Of these, 48,799 are in shelters, 159,036 are homeless and 372 are injured.

Civil Defense is also investigating the cause of four other deaths that may be related to the floods, in the cities of Caxias do Sul, Pinhal Grande, Santa Maria and Três Coroas.

River levels

The government of Rio Grande do Sul also publishes daily, at two times, the measurement of river levels. Comparison with the previous measurement shows that the water level has been falling very slowly.

  • Sinos – São Leopoldo – 7.12 meters (reduction of 0.15 m compared to 8h)
  • Gravataí – Passo das Canoas – 6.19 meters (reduction of 0.03 m compared to 8h)
  • Taquari River – Estrela – 15.05 meters (reduction of 4.18 m in 24 hours)
  • Uruguay River – Garruchos – 16.59 meters (reduction of 0.44 m compared to 8h; flood level is 15 m)
