A new landscape is already growing in Parque da Cidade Dona Sarah Kubitschek. The place, previously occupied by pine trees removed for safety reasons, is now a nursery full of new seedlings native to the Brazilian Cerrado. There are 2,000 seedlings of 65 native species that will change the landscape of the place when they grow, following the park’s original landscaping plan drawn up by Roberto Burle Marx.

The Government of the Federal District (GDF) completed the planting of new trees in March. According to the head of Novacap’s Parks and Gardens Department, Raimundo Oliveira, even though it takes a few years for the trees to grow and provide shade, the growth of the seedlings is within expectations and they are being constantly monitored.

“The growth of these species is not as accelerated as a pine forest would be, but we are providing differentiated treatment so that in five years there will already be species that provide shade and the population will be able to benefit from it”, highlights the manager. He stipulates that the fullness of the trees will be reached in around ten years.

According to the person responsible for replanting the forest, the teams monitor the fight against pests and ants on a weekly basis, in addition to keeping the area clean, vegetation control, irrigation, management and periodic fertilization so that there is accelerated growth.

During a bike ride near Parking Lot 4 of Parque da Cidade, where it is possible to see the new seedlings, programmer Guilherme Neves Souza, 29, said he had good expectations about the new landscape. “I’m very excited about what could happen, because this is a very typical place in Brasília. I think this renovation is important, because the pine trees were not native here. Having this space again reminds us of what we really are here, this area that is the Cerrado, a very beautiful mini-savannah”, he emphasizes.

No risk of falling

Among the 65 different species planted are 100 copaíbas, 25 brown laurels, 25 red mastic trees, 18 brazilwood seedlings, ten tamarind trees, six pequiz trees, 30 pitangueiras, 296 palm trees and more than 800 ipe trees – purple, white and of different colors. types of yellow.

Ipês are the favorite trees of retiree Sergio Neves, 73, who says he has already planted four in the region. For him, waiting for trees to grow is part of the afforestation process. “I’m waiting for the ones I planted seven years ago to flower, so this sphere here doesn’t cause me any worries, it’s just like that.” Sergio, who often runs in the park and always passes by the area where the new seedlings were planted, describes the measures taken in the region as necessary for the safety of the population.

The forest has already been 100% replanted, with the removal of stumps it is 80%. Raimundo emphasizes the importance of removing pine trees and replacing them with new planted trees, which can reach up to three meters and have low rates of falling.

“In addition to reducing the risk of falling trees that were more than 20 meters high, today we returned to the area suitable species from the cerrado with ideal behavior for Brasília’s climate. Our intention is for the forest to reflect the park’s initial project”, notes the Novacap representative.

The administrator of Parque da Cidade, Todi Moreno, reinforces that the park will not host any large events in the renovated area until the seedlings take shape, a decision taken so as not to hinder the development of the new vegetation. “Now we will actually have native trees that will bring more security to our visitors”, he says.
