The Government of Rio de Janeiro sanctioned a law that authorizes the implementation of screening and genetic tests in people over the age of 35 for early detection of cancer.

The rule, number 10,361/2024 and authored by deputy Tia Ju (Republicans), was published in the Official Gazette this Tuesday (07/05).

According to the text, priority will be given to family members who are blood descendants up to the 3rd degree of people who have been diagnosed with cancer; collateral relatives up to the 2nd degree of people who had cancer; citizens with chronic illnesses; and people aged 65 and over. The exam must be requested by a geneticist, mastologist or oncologist.

In the case of breast cancer, it is essential to present a report with a family history of the disease diagnosed before the age of 50, in two first-degree relatives or three relatives up to the second degree.

“Hereditary cancer is caused by a genetic mutation that the patient carries in the DNA of their cells. This mutation is present in part of the patients’ germ cells, that is, in the gametes, and can be passed on to their descendants. This means that descendants who inherit the mutation are at risk of developing tumors. There are several genetic hereditary cancer syndromes already described, including those that affect breasts, ovaries, intestines, skin, among other organs.”explained Aunt Ju.
