Archaeological research in Patos de Minas reveals mining sites from the 19th century – Clube Noticia

-

Patos de Minas City Council recently conducted archaeological research to identify and delimit two important historical mining sites. Located in the eastern region of the municipality, close to the Chumbo/Areado district, these sites include the Galena Mine, famous for its silver and lead extraction in the early 19th century, and the Iron Factory, active in the second half of the same century. .

The research involved identifying archaeological remains, built structures and areas environmentally modified to accommodate past developments. In addition, heritage education sessions were conducted for the technical team of the Directorate of Racial Equality, Memory and Cultural Heritage (Dimep) and students from Escola Municipal Major Augusto Porto, in Areado.

The results will be compiled in a report to be sent to the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan) for official registration. These sites, once registered, will not only enrich local history, but will also highlight the importance of Patos de Minas’ mineral heritage in the Brazilian context of the 19th century.
