Quadra Lixo Zero Program will open on Rua dos Restaurantes this Wednesday (8)

The first zero-waste commercial block in the Federal District will open this Wednesday (8), at 10am, at CLS 404/405 South, known as Rua dos Restaurantes. Created and managed by the Urban Cleaning Service (SLU), the Quadra Lixo Zero program will improve waste management in local businesses, an operation that will later be evaluated to cover other commercial blocks in the DF.

With the initiative, SLU installed six litter pickers on the court. Four of them will only receive recyclable materials, and the other two will be places to store waste – materials that cannot be used for recycling. Every day, teams from the municipality will collect the waste stored in the bins.

Organic waste, such as food scraps, will be collected by composting companies hired by traders. “There was great support from the traders on the block”, stated the CEO of SLU, Silvio Vieira. “The idea is that the waste from this block will no longer be sent to the landfill.”

Containers

With the installation of dust collectors, which are semi-buried containers, the objective is also to eliminate the accumulation of waste on the court, promoting cleaning and reducing the emergence of diseases and animal vectors.

“Here on the block, we have abundant commerce, with many restaurants, and we increasingly want to dispose of our waste in the correct way to become a model for the DF”, highlighted trader Marcos Baby. “We are together in this program that aims to help the planet and all of us.”

The resources for the installation of trash collectors under the Quadra Lixo Zero program came from a parliamentary amendment by district deputy Thiago Manzoni. Training and awareness-raising activities for employees and customers of restaurants and stores in CLS 404/405 are also planned.
