Forest zone in Pernambuco: Sugarcane fields with above-average rainfall should continue for months, says AFCP

Historically, the greatest amount of rain in the sugarcane region in Pernambuco usually occurs from April to July, which normally accounts for 80% of the volume expected for the entire year. Since January, by the way, the rainfall level has been above average. The La Niña phenomenon in the Pacific and the temperature and wind conditions in the Atlantic Ocean on the Northeast Coast of Brazil are important factors in the rainfall being favorable for sugarcane cultivation this year in the region. The information comes from the Climate Bulletin of the Association of Sugarcane Suppliers of Pernambuco (AFCP), signed by meteorologist Alexandre Magno.

“The climate outlook for the quarter (May/July) of this year should be for the occurrence of rainfall in the category above the historical average”, predicts Magno when noting that La Niña has established itself, and should, therefore, evolve towards favorable conditions in the period rainy season in the eastern sector of the Northeast, in particular for the North and South Mata regions of the state.

The meteorologist also confirms that there was above-average rainfall in the first four months of the year. And with La Niña acting, the scenario should continue. The quality and quantity of rain, in turn, will also depend on the atmospheric evolution of the tropical Atlantic Ocean. So far, this has been maintained throughout the year, with temperatures well above average. This induces the transport of moisture from the Atlantic to the continent, feeding the convective systems in the area, and thus improving the regularity and quantity of precipitation throughout the eastern sector of the state of Pernambuco.
