Doctor Fabrício Lemos interviewed this Monday (6), on Médico 24 Horas, the doctor specializing in Clinical Medicine Rinauro Santos, who has a long history in training doctors in Acre. The guest draws attention to the growing problem of lupus in Acre and suggests the creation of a special line of care for patients.

Born in Cruzeiro do Sul in 1975, Rinauro talks about his career in which he always maintained his dream, in his childhood and adolescence, of becoming a doctor. In Belém – Pará, he studied medicine at the Federal University of Pará and met his wife during his studies, returning to Acre in 2001. “Since then, we have trained over 130 doctors in clinical medicine, the vast majority of specialists in Acre in clinical specialist ”, said Santos.

In addition to being a university and residency professor, Rinauro Santos is also a doctor at the Fundação Hospital do Acre – FUNDHACRE, where he focuses on the most serious cases of illnesses such as cancer, pneumonia, heart failure, lupus, or even undiagnosed illnesses. Of these pathologies, says Rinauro, the number of lupus patients has been surprising. “Of the rheumatological diseases, we have had a lot of lupus with the most diverse manifestations. Many of them have renal manifestations, requiring immunosuppressants”, says the doctor.

As it is a systemic disease, Dr. Rinauro explains that it is common for lupus to begin causing discomfort in joints, hair loss and weight loss, but some pulmonary manifestations such as fluid in the lung or cardiological problems are also common. The problem, says the doctor, is that patients do not always arrive at high-complexity care with a diagnosis made. “We often admit patients who already have a diagnosis and undergo medical follow-up and other times we admit patients without a diagnosis who are diagnosed there with us”, says the doctor.

Asking about the difficulty of diagnosing lupus, Rinauro says that the complexity of the disease makes the symptoms, if looked at in isolation, seem like focal problems: “It is a disease with a thousand faces that presents itself in different organs. When it appears in the joints, it is easy to be confused with rheumatoid osteoarthritis. When it affects the lungs, it can be confused with tuberculosis or pneumonia. When it affects a kidney, it can be confused with other glomerulopathies. It is a disease that kills a lot because it is a disease in which the patient needs strict monitoring and access to a lot of medication, which is often not very accessible, this patient is also very vulnerable to other infections”.

With the significant number of cases, the doctor suggests the creation of a specific line of care for patients with lupus, to facilitate care and medications.
