Residents make a ‘human chain’ to rescue people stranded in RS; check out video

A kind of “human cordon” was formed by volunteers in an attempt to rescue people who are stranded in the Mathias Velho neighborhood, in Canoas, in Rio Grande do Sul. The city of Canoas is among the 334 affected by the heavy rains that have hit the State since the beginning of last week. Civil Defense confirmed this Sunday, 5th, the death of 75 people as a result of the storms. The number of deaths already exceeds the environmental tragedy that occurred in the State, in September 2023, when 54 people died.

At the moment, there are 155 injured and 103 missing. In total, more than 780 million people were affected by the state’s worst climate catastrophe. There are still 88,019 homeless people, that is, they are staying with relatives or friends.

Hundreds of thousands of people are without water and electricity due to heavy rains. According to the latest Civil Defense update, a total of 839 thousand properties were without water supply and 421 thousand properties were without power across the State.

Temporal

Response teams prioritize, at first, the rescue of residents in risk areas, but the state government is already centralizing efforts to help those who had to leave their homes. In Porto Alegre, for example, Civil Defense receives donations of mattresses, blankets and bed and bath linen.

There are also campaigns for donating blood and supplying the blood center in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, volunteering in the health sector for doctors, nurses and other professionals, in addition to the provision of a Pix key for cash donations to SOS Rio Grande do Sul.
