Anyone who sees the white hair and open smile of Ruth Alves Teixeira, 75 years old, feels from afar that there is history there. Having worked for the community for decades, there is no one who doesn’t greet her and say “this is an old one”.
One of the first residents of the Rouxinóis complex, in Campo Grande, Ruth began her career in community leadership alongside her then husband, who founded the association in the neighborhood.
“I joined to help him, then I founded the mothers’ club, the União Campo Grandense de Clube de Mães e Associações Comunitárias de Mulheres de Mato Grosso do Sul, I was part of Umam (Municipal Union of Residents’ Associations)”, he recalls.
There were uninterrupted years dedicated to the neighborhood, including electing two successors, and structuring a mothers’ club throughout the state of Mato Grosso do Sul.
For the Undersecretary of Community Affairs, Jairo Luiz da Silva, this look from the State Government towards leaders is essential in strengthening the work. “The Undersecretary congratulates the community leaders on the day. After all, you are the ones who know the main needs of the community and take this path to public power.”
Secretary of State for Citizenship, Viviane Luiza, highlights the protagonism of community leaders, and the excellent work carried out at the forefront. “They are the instruments, together with all the residents, to bring together the demands of the neighborhoods. The State Secretariat for Citizenship has been working as an instrument for these community leaders so that we can implement public policies.”
The Subsecretariat of Public Policies for Community Affairs is located at Av. Mato Grosso, 5778, Jardim Veraneio, in Campo Grande.
