From this Friday (3), the flu vaccination campaign in Santa Catarina will be expanded. The remaining doses of the vaccine will be available to the entire population over 6 months of age. The measure aims to reduce the number of hospitalizations and serious cases of the disease, andespecially among the most vulnerable groups.

Increasing vaccination coverage is essential

Flu vaccination coverage in the state is still at 32%, well below the 90% target recommended by the Ministry of Health (MS). The expansion of the campaign seeks to increase the protection of the population, especially priority groups, which include:

  • Elderly people over 60 years old;
  • Pregnant women;
  • Postpartum women;
  • Children aged 6 months to 5 years;
  • People with chronic illnesses;
  • Health professionals;
  • Indigenous;
  • Population deprived of liberty;
  • Disabled people.

The vaccine offered in the public health network protects against the main influenza viruses present in Brazil: H1N1, H3N2 and B. Complete immunization takes two to three weeks after applying the dose, therefore, the State Department of Health (SES) reinforces the importance of vaccination as quickly as possible.

Children who have never had the flu vaccine need to take two doses 30 days apart. For those who are also in the age group and in priority municipalities for the dengue vaccine (10 to 14 years old), the interval between flu and dengue doses should be 24 hours.

The Secretary of State for Health, Carmen Zanotto, highlights the importance of vaccination for the entire population, especially for priority groups. “Getting vaccinated is the best way to protect yourself against the flu and avoid serious complications, such as pneumonia and hospitalizations. Respiratory diseases have already arrived and everyone need to do their part. Vaccines save lives”, says the secretary.
