A video sent to the editorial team At the News reporting that care was neglected for elderly Maria Valdevino de Oliveira, aged 78, resident of Rua Juarez Távora, in the center of the municipality of Plácido de Castro, in the interior of Acre.

In the video, the elderly woman’s family asked for help via 192 from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu), but the supposed regulatory doctor who answered the call denied assistance and sent the ambulance at the municipal hospital.

In the call, the family questions the lack of care and the supposed doctor says he cannot send the ambulance because the elderly woman did not have “criteria” to receive care. According to the family, Maria Valdevino, 78 years old, is hypertensive, has diabetes and Parkinson’s disease, and was still denied treatment.

Still according to the family, at the time of the request, the attendant, ironically, even stated that the patient’s health condition did not characterize the need for the use of an ambulance, even with the insistence of one of the daughters, stating categorically that the The mother’s health was very serious and it would be difficult for the elderly woman to get to the Dr Manoel Marinho Monte Hospital. The case happened around 1pm this Sunday (5). After an hour, the family, in an improvised way, managed to take the elderly woman to the hospital.

Attendant: Yes! But then, her condition now, that she is not eating and has a fever, does not indicate the need to use an ambulance!

Requester (Daughter): She had to be dying, right?

Attendant: Do you understand?

Requester (Daughter): No friend, I don’t understand… I already tried to take her there [hospital] and I couldn’t. My last option is to call SAMU and SAMU doesn’t want to answer me?

Attendant: Yes, ma’am, but a fever and not eating is not a serious condition to use an ambulance!

Requester (Daughter): She’s not walking. She’s not standing up. She’s not even talking… Friend, we need the ambulance. The ambulance has to come get her. We can’t take her!

Attendant: It’s not a matter of necessity, Madam. It’s a matter of gravity!

Requester (Daughter): Of course there is a need, my friend, she is feeling ill here!

Attendant: You have to take her so the doctor can evaluate her.

Requester (Daughter): Friend, at this time the hospital is only open for emergencies!

Attendant: Yes! But then, you need to take her to the hospital. When a person has a fever and is not eating, it is not the ambulance that takes them to the hospital.

Requester (Daughter): Friend, my mother is 78 years old! You want to compare an elderly person with a young person, right?

Attendant: No need, Madam! It’s OK?

Requester (Daughter): For the love of God!

The elderly woman’s family argues that, given the severity of the chronic conditions she faces, any complication could be potentially dangerous and, therefore, the elderly woman should receive a quick and effective response from the emergency service.

Health experts point out that patients with multiple chronic conditions, as is the case of Maria Valdevino de Oliveira, may have an increased risk of acute complications, making immediate access to emergency services crucial. Denial of care in situations like this can result in serious consequences for the patient’s health, including death.

The Samu Customer Service Center in Rio Branco was contacted to discuss the matter, but reported that management only operates during business hours. However, the attendant, who identified himself as a doctor, confirmed the family’s request for assistance, but did not provide further details.
