Search for dividends skyrockets up to 370% in Brazil, says Google; see main questions

Brazil was the country in Latin America with the greatest interest in information about dividends, according to a survey carried out by Google Trends, which measured searches on the topic in recent years.

According to the study, demand for the subject in Brazil increased more than 70 times compared to the last three years with the previous period. In five years, the increase was 370%.

The term “best dividends of the year” was one of the terms that rose the most in the last 12 months, according to Google Trends research, which points to 2023 as the year of greatest interest in the subject among Brazilians.

Petrobras, Sanepar, FIIs and even BDRs are some names that appear in the questions with the greatest growth in Brazil in the last 12 months – when the subject is dividends.

What are dividends?

Dividends are the portion of the company’s profit that is distributed to shareholders. They depend on business performance, cash generation, earnings and the company’s strategy. They are a source of income for the investor, even if the shares depreciate, and they do not pay Income Tax.

Determining when a share will distribute dividends can be a difficult task, as payments depend on the company making accounting profits in a given quarter, and there is no rule that fixes the exact dates for transfers. But, it is possible to analyze the history.

To help investors identify which are some of the shares that pay dividends regularly, Economatica raised, at the request of InfoMoney, shares that recorded earnings payments in the last five years, from December 2017 to December 2023.

Although dividends are exempt from taxation, the taxpayer must inform the IRS of the proceeds of the companies in which they invest.

To declare stock dividends in Income Tax:

• In the “Exempt and Non-Taxable Income” form, in the field “09 – Profits and dividends received”.
• Then the taxpayer must click on “new” and inform whether they are the holder or dependent, the CNPJ and the corporate name of the Company that paid the dividends (paying source), as well as the amount received.
• Repeat the process for each share you have in your portfolio.

Dividends are one of the types of earnings distributed by companies. Others are interest on equity, bonuses and subscription rights.

The dividends that the investor receives are proportional to the number of shares or quotas he has. The greater the volume, the greater the value received.
