A rattlesnake (Caudisona durissa), one of the most venomous snakes in Brazil, appeared on the streets of the Santa Mônica neighborhood, in the western region of Campo Grande, frightening residents and putting environmental authorities on alert, due to the risk of accidents.

Learn more about the rattlesnake:

“The children were playing in the street and saw her leaving a house and crossing the street on her way to a forested area”, points out one of the neighborhood residents.

She says that the appearance of snakes in the neighborhood has become increasingly frequent, due to the grass having grown a lot in vacant lots and wooded areas that surround the community. “Last month one appeared on a neighbor’s balcony,” says the resident.

Biologist Henrique Abrahão explains that as the rattlesnake is an ectothermic animal, that is, it depends on external sources of heat, it is common for this species of snake to appear during warmer periods.

Because this type of encounter is increasingly common, the Environmental Military Police (PMA) warns the population about measures to avoid accidents.

The main recommendation is to avoid getting close to the animal and not try to capture it, calling a public security body responsible for the protection of fauna, with the PMA itself, wherever there is a unit.
