A 39-year-old fisherman drowned after diving into the sea off the North Coast of Rio Grande do Norte to catch lobsters. The case happened around noon this Wednesday (1st) in Rio do Fogo.
Pedro Nicácio da Cunha Filho He was married and leaves three children.
According to the fisherman’s brother-in-law, Bruno Lopes, Pedro had left home to work with other colleagues on a raft, on the first day of lobster fishing, after the closed season.
The group was approximately 10 miles from the beach – approximately 18 km – and the fisherman dived without oxygen, at a depth of around 15 meters.
According to his brother-in-law, Pedro was experienced and his colleagues were unable to say what went wrong in the process.
“As long as I’ve known him, he’s been fishing for lobster and octopus. I think since he was 18,” said Bruno.
Still according to the brother-in-law, when they realized that their colleague was not well, the other fishermen took him off the raft and used a white flag to ask for help from a vessel that was passing by.
The boat had oxygen and provided first care to the victim, but upon arriving at the beach, he was pronounced dead.
The body was taken to the headquarters of the Technical-Scientific Institute of Expertise (Itep), in Natal, where it underwent forensic examinations, and was released to the family this Thursday morning (1).
According to family members, Pedro Nicácio’s body will be laid to rest in the city’s fishermen’s colony and buried in the municipality’s public cemetery – known as the old cemetery – at around 4pm.
“He was a very sweet, hard-working person. So sweet that the city’s sinners didn’t go out fishing today, in mourning,” said Bruno.
