The Federal Highway Police (PRF) held, this Thursday (02), the opening of Yellow May, at the PRF Operational Unit in Roraima, on BR 174. The action was carried out in conjunction with the Military Police (PMRR), Department Roraima State Transit Authority (DETRAN-RR) and the National Land Transport Agency (ANTT).

Yellow May – The Yellow May movement emerged in 2011, following the institution, by the UN, of the decade of action for traffic safety. Since then, the month of May has become a reference for the intensification of actions in several countries, aiming to reduce traffic violence. The color yellow was chosen because it represents the “attention” sign at traffic lights around the world.

With the theme “Peace in traffic begins with you”, Yellow May foresees coordinated actions between public authorities and civil society with the intention of putting issues related to road safety on the agenda and mobilizing the whole of society, involving the most diverse segments : government bodies, companies, professional associations, associations, federations and organized civil society to discuss the topic, engage in actions and spread knowledge, increasing awareness of traffic safety in the most different spheres.

This month, the PRF will intensify traffic education actions, inspection actions aimed at specific groups of drivers and vehicle inspections, with a focus on blood alcohol levels. Special attention will also be given to motorcyclists, given that accidents involving this type of vehicle have increased. In the first quarter of 2024, the Federal Highway Police recorded 7,119 motorcycle accidents, compared to 6,259 in the same period last year. These occurrences resulted in 434 deaths (compared to 391 in the first quarter of 2023) and 8,590 injuries (7,008 in the same period last year).

Traffic education work goes beyond highways. The Federal Highway Police promotes permanent traffic education and awareness actions, with lectures in schools for children and adults, and for companies that operate fleets, in addition to partner institutions. On these occasions, police officers draw attention to the importance of safe traffic, focusing on reducing accidents, deaths and injuries, in order to prevent abuses that lead to serious accidents in the federal network.
