The new president of Independent League of the Samba School of Rio de Janeiro (Liesa), Gabriel Davidstudies the possibility of extending the samba school parades in Special Group for three nights. The initiative is being discussed between the new board, the Rio City Hall and the TV Globo, which holds the broadcast rights for the event. During a press conference, Gabriel David highlighted that o “Carnival is a co-production between Liesa and Riotur”. Therefore, any change to the party must be carefully discussed.
In an interview with Bruno Chateaubriand, Gabriel David highlighted that the proposal for three nights of parades will only be taken to the plenary when he has access to a set of data favorable to the new format of the event.
“I will only take this proposal for three nights of parades to a plenary session when all the data is in place. If it is acceptable, we will put it to a vote. Those who will decide on a change like this will be the presidents of the associations”, said the president of Liesa to the columnist.
According to the proposal evaluated, the Special Group parades would now feature performances from four schools per night. Liesa’s manager highlighted that implementing the measure requires the assessment of many variables. Technical issues, such as lighting and sound, are some of them, in addition to the financial impact generated by holding another day of the parade.
According to Chateaubriand, depending on City Hall, the proposal tends to come to fruition, with the parades starting later and ending earlier than usual. Generally, the associations that end their parades in the early hours of Sunday to Monday and Monday to Tuesday arrive at Apoteose in broad daylight.
For next year’s edition, the traditional format of the event continues to apply, with the show taking place on Sunday and Monday, starting at 10pm. On May 23rd, Liesa will hold the draw with the order of the parades, with public participation allowed for the first time.
The inauguration of the Sambódromo, in 1984, began the current format of Grupo Especial parades. Forty years later, Rio is expecting a change that will have a major impact not only on the event’s production chain.
With the change, the economic turnover in the city will have a considerable advance, through the increase in the number of national and international tourists, impacting the hotel chain, restaurants and bars. But the initiative would also require the readjustment of activities linked to the event, such as the development of a new schedule for international cruises, which dock in the capital of Rio de Janeiro during the biggest popular festival on the planet.
