City of SC distributes largest tilapia broth in Brazil at party, says city hall | Santa Catarina

Armazém, in the south of Santa Catarina, distributed 2.8 thousand liters of tilapia broth in the third edition of the party that bears the same name as the food this Sunday (28). The city is the Capital of Santa Catarina for freshwater fish and celebrates the title by serving the largest tilapia broth in the countryaccording to the city hall.

A Broth preparation started early in the morning. For the dish, more than 700 kg of fish and 500 kg. The liquid was stirred inside a pan weighing almost 12 tons and with the help of a backhoe and an iron spoon (watch the video above).

Chives, parsley, bay leaves and leeks were used in the seasonings. A sauce with pork lard, tomato and chicken broth also guaranteed the final flavor of the dish. The estimate is that the food will serve around 4,500 people.

State law nº 17,673 made the city the Tilapia Capital of Santa Catarina. The municipality, which has 9,800 residents, holds the title for being the largest fish producer in the state, according to the state government.

According to data from the Observatório Agro Catarinense, which compiles fish farming data, in 2022 the municipality of 8.8 thousand residents produced 3,168 tons of fish. Of this number, 3,166 tons were tilapia.

A video, recorded in the previous edition of the event, shows the broth being removed from the pan by the backhoe and inserted into a filter, which directed the broth to smaller pans (watch below). After this process, the dish was served to the public.

With a total volume of 7.45 thousand liters, the pan was cast in Piracicaba (SP) and assembled in Joinville, in the North of Santa Catarina, where its owner, the late businessman José Bittencourt Rodrigues, who died in 2023, lived.

According to the city hall, Rodrigues gave the pot to the municipality for the party, where he was from. Now, the family will continue to maintain the tradition, according to the municipality.
