In a GCF technical exchange, Acre presents proposals for developing a project focused on forestry economy

Managers, indigenous and civil society leaders from Bolivia, Peru, Mexico, Colombia and Brazil (Acre) participated this Friday, 26th, in the Working Group (GT) on the cross-border approach (Madre de Dios-Acre-Pando), at the technical exchange of the Governors’ Climate and Forest Task Force (GCF), in Santa Cruz de La Sierra, Bolivia.

The objective of the GT is to propose actions, based on suggestions from members and other participants, which will serve as a basis for developing a project focusing on the new forest-based economy.

The president of the Regional Committee for Partnerships with Indigenous Peoples and Traditional Populations of the GCF in Brazil and Secretary of State for Indigenous Peoples of Acre, Francisca Arara, and the executive director of the Institute for Climate Change and Environmental Services Regulation (IMC), Jaksilande Araújo , participated in the GT led by the GCF coordinator in Brazil, Carlos Aragon.

In a broad debate, the representatives were able to share the challenges faced in each jurisdiction and made important contributions, based on the particularities of their State, their experiences and needs.

“At this meeting we were able to make important contributions, since the State of Acre has an advanced environmental policy, which is Sisa with its active governance bodies. This shows the government’s commitment to fulfilling the commitments already made, and also with respect for the principles, safeguards and rights of indigenous peoples and other beneficiaries”, highlights Jaksilande Araújo.

The proposals presented by the managers were aimed at the social and economic needs of the region with actions necessary to face the challenges of the border region in combating and reducing deforestation and proposing means of implementation, including financing and support.

“We seek a consensus between Acre, Brazil, Bolivia and Peru, which is transborderism. We need to be more aligned with the participation of governments, civil society and indigenous peoples so that we can act, in an integrated manner, to combat deforestation in the three countries and identify alternatives that promote a forestry economy with respect for the particularities of each one. On the occasion, the Secretary of the Environment of Acre, Julie Messias, accompanied by the director of the Environment, André Pelliccioti, presented the Plan for Prevention, Control of Deforestation and Fires in the State of Acre (PPCDQ-AC).

When detailing the main axes of the PPCDQ, the manager highlighted the Acre government’s efforts to combat deforestation and develop a forestry economy.

The PPCDQ Acre aims to guarantee effective inspection actions and combat environmental crimes, and brings together a series of guidelines that guide strategies, goals and actions to reduce deforestation and environmental degradation, conserve biodiversity and encourage environmental services. Every four years, the plan is updated with the participation and contribution of organized civil society, indigenous peoples, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), bodies and institutions that make up the Interinstitutional Management Committee and also the Federal Government.
