Patient says he was shot in the shoulder by the killer of the guard at Hospital da Restauração

The crimes took place this Friday (26), and the name of the shooter was not released. The patient who was shot said he was in the hospital to treat injuries from a motorcycle accident that occurred on Thursday morning (25) and was grazed by the gunshot.

“I felt the object [a bala]. When he pointed [a arma] for me, I have already come. When I turned around, he gave [o disparo]. When did it [o disparo]he took it by the skin of his teeth. […] This all happened in the hallway. It was just a graze,” the victim told TV Globo.

The patient also said that the confusion that preceded the shooting occurred during a change of guards at Hospital da Restauração.

“Nivaldo had already rested and went to make the exchange with another guard. Then it was time she was going to take off [a arma] to give him [Nivaldo]. It was at that time that the boy [o atirador] he saw the open door of the red wing and was about to leave. It was at that moment that the security guard grabbed his shoulder: ‘Hey, boy, you can’t leave.’ It was when she got distracted and, when she got distracted, he pulled away. When the guard was talking to me, he [Nivaldo] You saw him with the revolver and went up to him, then he shot. That’s when I yelled, ‘Hey, boy, don’t do that.’ Then he grabbed it and shot me,” he said.

He also said the shooter threatened to kill anyone who tried to stop him from leaving the hospital. “It was a rush, the people were all in agony. He was already threatening the people there, saying he wanted to leave. […] Other people arrived, wanted to talk to him and he started threatening too, saying he was going to kill, that he wasn’t afraid, that he already had nine homicides under his belt”, he declared.

The patient reported that he experienced moments of tension and was scared by everything he went through inside the HR. “Everyone was scared. I don’t even know how I am. Right away, they had to calm me down, they gave me a tranquilizer and the police chief told me, when I was discharged, to come and give a statement because, at the same time, I am being a witness and a victim”, he said.

Video shows security guards beating and shooting patient who killed hospital guard

• A video sent to WhatsApp from TV Globo shows guards at Hospital da Restauração beating and shooting the patient who stole a gun and killed a guard at the health unit (see video above);
• The images were recorded minutes after the death of Nivaldo Bezerra da Silva, according to the lawyer representing the professionals, Eduardo Morais;
• In the video, which has strong images, it is possible to see an ambulance parked in front of Praça do Derby, the man lying on the ground and two guards standing;
• The images also show one of the guards kicking and then three other professionals arriving and also attacking the patient;
• Then, one of them shoots the fallen man, who stops moving. Afterwards, the security guards get on motorbikes and leave the place;
• The shot was given to the patient in self-defense, according to Eduardo Morais;
• The guards involved in the patient’s death were taken to the Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP);
• The guard who appears in the video shooting the patient was arrested for murder, and the other three gave statements and were released.

• The weapon was stolen at around 4:30 am, at the entrance to the red wing;
• The patient is from Timbaúba, in the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco, and was admitted with back pain in the hospital’s orthopedics department;
• He took a guard’s gun at the time of the changing of the guard and shot Nivaldo Bezerra, who was trying to restrain him;
• Professionals tried to resuscitate the victim, who did not resist and died in the HR emergency room;
• Nivaldo Bezerra was in the process of retiring and this was the last shift of his career;
• Another guard was shot in the chest, but was wearing a bulletproof vest and suffered a fractured rib;
• The patient caught the driver of an ambulance and fled the scene, but was intercepted by security guards and subsequently killed.

According to Petrus Andrade Lima, director of Hospital da Restauração, the security of the health unit has 66 hired security guards. Of this total, 16 professionals work on night shifts; and 18, during the day.

In an interview with TV Globodelegate Diego Pinheiro, manager of the DHPP, explained the next steps in the police investigation.

“We are working with the hypothesis that he [o paciente] has gone into an outbreak. We do not have this confirmation. The investigation will continue and you can verify this. Hospital staff and family members will be heard,” she said.
