Video shows security guards beating and shooting patient who killed hospital guard

According to the lawyer representing the professionals, Eduardo Morais, the images were recorded minutes after the death of 66-year-old security guard Nivaldo Bezerra da Silva. (see video above).

The images are strong. They show an ambulance parked in front of Derby Square, the man lying on the ground and two guards standing. One of them kicks and then three other professionals arrive and also attack the patient, whose name was not disclosed.

Then, one of them shoots the fallen man, who stops moving. Later, the guards get on motorbikes and leave the place. According to lawyer Eduardo Morais, the shot was fired in self-defense.

“When the guard approaches, you understand that he [o paciente] was going to make some reaction and fire a containment shot”, said the defender.

The security guards involved in the patient’s death were taken to the Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP), in Recife. The person who appears in the video shooting the patient was arrested in the act, and the other three gave statements and were released.

In an interview with TV Globodelegate Diego Pinheiro, manager of the DHPP, told details of the armed patient’s attempted escape (see video above).

“This patient, in possession of this weapon, fled the hospital through the stairwell, stole an ambulance and forced the driver to drive to take him out of the hospital. The driver, after a few meters, threw this ambulance onto the sidewalk. This ambulance is followed by the hospital guards and, at that moment, there is a confrontation between the guards and this patient shoots a guard and hits him in the vest, in the chest”, he declared.

According to the delegate, two security guards shot the patient.

“The guard retaliates and hits him with two shots. The patient comes to the floor. From the images we saw, apparently there was no way to react anymore. A third guard appears and shoots him fatally. […] The images were checked, all the security guards who participated in the incident were interviewed and the security guard who fired the fatal shot was identified when this patient was apparently no longer able to react”, he said.

This third guard was charged with murder. The Civil Police took statements from four security guards involved in the case. “Four guards were led: the one who had the weapon stolen and the others who clashed with him when the ambulance went up the sidewalk,” said Diego Pinheiro.

The delegate explained the next steps in the police investigation. “We are working with the hypothesis that he [o paciente] has gone into an outbreak. We do not have this confirmation. The investigation will continue and you can verify this. Hospital staff and family members will be heard,” she said.

The weapon was stolen around 4:30 am, at the entrance to the red wing. The patient is from Timbaúba, in the Zona da Mata of Pernambuco, and was admitted with back pain in the hospital’s orthopedics department. He took a guard’s gun at the time of the changing of the guard and shot Nivaldo Bezerra, who was trying to restrain him.

The patient then surrendered to the driver of an ambulance and fled the scene, but was intercepted by security guards and subsequently killed. According to Eduardo Morais, the attacker also injured a third worker.

According to Petrus Andrade Lima, director of Hospital da Restauração, the unit’s security has 66 hired guards. Of this total, 16 professionals work on night shifts, and 18 on day shifts.

In a note, the Civil Police said only that it is investigating the case, that the teams are carrying out investigations and that “more information will be provided in due course”.
