Data revealed by Rio Bus show that 2,800 buses were vandalized in the city of River only in the last year. These are cases of vandalism, including the use of vehicles as barricades by criminals, causing millions in losses and affecting urban mobility.

The union that represents the city’s bus companies also points out that approximately 230 vehicles are set on fire every month. Throughout 2023, vandalism directly affected around 6.5 million Rio residents and generated financial losses of more than 46 million reais in repairs.

In response to acts of vandalism, police Civil It is Military carried out a major operation in Complexo do Alemão, aiming to arrest criminals from other states taking refuge in this group of favelas. Valente mentions that during operations like this, buses are directed to alternative routes in order to preserve the safety of vehicles and passengers.

In an attempt to combat and raise awareness about the consequences of vandalism, Rio Ônibus launched the campaign “Whoever is a child does not falter”. The initiative seeks to involve the community, showing that the degradation of public transport harms the population that depends on these services daily. With this movement, a significant reduction in acts of vandalism and an increase in awareness about the importance of buses for the city’s mobility are expected.
