Teams playing away from home due to force majeure problems would not be new, not even in South America. In Europe this happened a few times, such as the beginning of Shakhtar’s itinerant life, which began a decade ago, due to the annexation of Crimea, near to Donetsk, by Russia, which would invade Ukraine, affecting the other teams in the country. Even so, the Ukrainian championship resumed in August 2022, after eight months of suspension.
With the war with Hamas, UEFA determined that the games of Israeli teams in the competitions it organizes would not be held on Israeli soil. With that, Maccabi Haifa and Maccabi Tel Aviv went to play international matches valid for the Conference in Hungary. Furthermore, the squads were without some foreign athletes, who left the country when the conflict began.
In South America, in 2021, amid the new coronavirus pandemic, the Ecuadorian government banned foreigners from entering the country. Thus, Independiente Del Vale sent the game against Grêmio, in the preliminary round of the Libertadores, in Assunção. He won in Paraguay and again in Porto Alegre, eliminating the Gremistas and causing the fall of coach Renato Gaucho Portaluppi.
