FAB rescues two-year-old child in Rio Grande do Sul

A Brazilian Air Force plane rescued a two-year-old child during flooding in the municipality of Faxinal do Soturno, in Rio Grande do Sul this Thursday morning (2). She was hospitalized in serious condition and needed to be transferred to another health unit.

The operation to remove the boy lasted 24 hours. The delay is due to travel difficulties due to the flood that isolated the municipality. The hospital was flooded. GloboNews showed how the military managed to remove the child and her mother from the scene (see video above).

This Wednesday (1st), a family was stranded in the city of Candelária and was removed from the house where it was surrounded by water (see below). The municipality registered at least 100 people stranded by the storms.

The FAB participates in the rescues using two H-60 ​​Black Hawk helicopters, from the Fifth Squadron of the Eighth Aviation Group (5th/8th GAV), to assist in the rescues.

The storms left 24 dead and 21 missing, authorities confirmed earlier this afternoon. There are 8,300 people away from home, according to the Civil Defense bulletin released this Thursday morning. The last three deaths were confirmed in Santa Maria and São João do Polêsine.

In total, 134 cities recorded flooding, falling barriers and landslides. The most affected areas are the Central, Vales, Serra and Metropolitan regions of Porto Alegre.

The National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) maintains red alert over part of Rio Grande do Sul until 3pm this Thursday. The weather forecast indicates heavy rain, with hail, intense winds and electrical discharges.
