Continuing the operation to combat electricity theft in MS, the Civil Police, through the Ribas do Rio Pardo Police Station, with the support of Energisa and the Forensics Unit, launched an operation to identify fraud in energy meters in homes and businesses in Ribas do Rio Pardo.

After investigations by the General Investigations Sector, with data obtained from the electricity concessionaire, discrepancies in information on energy consumption in various parts of the city were found, which is why police teams, experts and Energisa technicians went to the properties for inspection of electrical energy standards.

Several locations were investigated, and in six properties the occurrence of electrical energy fraud was determined by official expertise. In total, three people were taken to the police station to provide clarification, and were then released, and one person was charged with the crime of theft by fraud.

It is noteworthy that the theft of electricity can cause fatal accidents due to clandestine connections, which can cause fires and explosions. Fraud, better known as “gato”, causes overload on the electrical grid and can worsen the quality of the service provided, leaving the system more susceptible to interruptions and power fluctuations.

The National Electric Energy Agency (ANEEL) estimates that fraud in Brazil is gigantic, representing more than 31.5 thousand gigawatts, which can support properties in a large part of the State of Mato Grosso do Sul. The operation will cover all municipalities of the State served by Energisa.
