In January last year, during his inauguration as president of Sport for the 2023/24 biennium, Yuri Romão promised the Pernambuco club’s return to the national scene and used regional rivals Fortaleza and Bahia as a parameter. He stated that Sport cannot fall behind the two rivals. In a recent interview, the president spoke again about the subject and stated that Bahia and Fortaleza today are the great forces in the Northeast.
“Today, even considering the investment, I would say that we have two great forces in the Northeast ahead of Sport, which are Bahia and Fortaleza”, stated the president of the Pernambuco club, in an interview last week, with CNN Esportes S/A.
Yuri Romão projects Sport’s return to Série A this year to return to the fight for leadership in northeastern football. He highlighted the investments made by Bahia and Fortaleza, but believes that the Pernambuco club is capable of joining its rivals and fighting on equal terms.
“We at Sport are lucky because we have a large and passionate fan base that goes to the field, just like Santa Cruz does too. As we return to Serie A, we will soon fight for leadership in the Northeast. Today, as I said, the investments made by these two teams are much greater and it is legitimate, but we will fight to be with them”, he added.
“Now we already have the base and foundation to have a great year, and in fact reach the end of the year with our main objective achieved, which is to return to the elite of Brazilian football”, he concluded.
